I have been learning with this club for some time and continue to be impressed by the dedication they all have, even when not taking a lesson. This willingness shows how much they all genuinely enjoy their job, something lacking in many other organisations.

Shobdon has it all! A team of friendly instructors who really go the extra mile to give comprehensive and professional training. Very competitive rates. A beautiful setting in the Welsh marches with some of the quietest airspace in the UK, yet only a few minutes flying to get to the busy airports. A cafe serving excellent food..the best breakfasts in the West!
    What more do you want!

If you are learning or being “checked out” you will find the staff here kind and forgiving(!).
A beautiful part of our country with no controlled air space for quite a distance.

I would not be surprised if this was the least expensive place to fly or train in the UK.

Stunning location right on the Welsh border with great staff & instructors.
On site accommodation as well as the busy Hotsur Cafe & Bar.
    Highly recommended.

An awesome place to learn to fly. Excellent training by friendly instructors and in such a beautiful part of the country. I felt so welcomed at the airfield.
The facilities are great and the type of airfield it is means you don’t have to waste time with lengthy taxing.
Straight forward to book and at a very reasonable price too.
    I highly recommend this airfield.

In the latter stages of completing my PPL at Herefordshire Aero Club, I’m in the fortunate position of having had the experience of two flying schools. I continued my learning at Shobdon last year with about 15 hours already logged with two previous instructors. This has given me the unique chance to compare two schools in the way they are run as well as crucially all of the important qualities of the instructors…

From this I can confidently say Shobdon is miles above (pun shamelessly intended) the previous experience I had. As far as I am concerned there is everything at HAC that you could want from a flying school:

    – The perfect balance of professionalism and ‘down-to-Earthness’
    – A hugely friendly community always meeting you with a warm welcome on arrival
    – Excellent quality equipment and facilities (even the coffee, food and hospitality in the cafe is spot on!)
    – Capable, competent and, most importantly, approachable instructors/CFI
    – Some of the most beautiful countryside (and quietest airspace) that the country has to offer to fly in, which is very easy to take for granted with both feet planted firmly on the floor!

I have hugely enjoyed completing my PPL at HAC and my only regret is that I didn’t start it here originally. Whilst some people would consider passing the skills test and becoming qualified the most exciting part of being a student pilot, I have mixed feelings. The whole learning experience and flying with someone so approachable has made every hour hugely enjoyable. So much so, I feel that this coming to an end will feel in some way a bit of an anti climax. Current/new student pilots – enjoy every minute of it!

I would highly recommend HAC to anyone within an hour or two travel time of Shobdon Airfield. Believe me, you won’t find a better place in the wider Herefordshire/Mid-Wales area to complete your PPL.

Mid January 2015 I decided I wanted my PPL, so I called Shobdon Airfield.
Started my lessons mid February with Jody. If you take it seriously and you want to be a good pilot, there is a lot to take on board. Don’t worry, Jody is more than capable of seeing any areas you find difficult and working on them in a way that makes it easier for you to absorb the information and will explain anything you don’t understand. Jody has a keen eye for detail meaning his training is thorough and it’s clearly important to him through his training you become a good pilot.
I want to continue through to my commercial licence and hope Shobdon can offer this very soon.
Shobdon is a great airfield, full of friendly people who love flying and keen to spread their knowledge with good facilities for your plane and offering a great cafe if you are peckish.
Flying is just the best feeling, we live on an amazing planet and its seriously beautiful up there! So come boys and girls, get up there and enjoy.

    Thank you Jody.

I have recently begun my PPL here, and it is so nice to have an airfield not far from home with friendly staff and very well looked after facilities and grounds. My instructor always has time to help explain things and give advice when needed, even outside of my lesson times. Always a very friendly atmosphere and a pleasure to be part of the club.

I received a trial flight voucher for my 14th birthday and have been taking lessons with Jody for the past year. On every visit myself and my family are made to feel extremely welcome and with a one hour journey each way, a full English breakfast in the cafe is very welcome. Jody, my instructor and CFI is extremely approachable and very encouraging, I am absolutely loving my lessons with him and have 12 hours towards my PPL and plan to do my first solo on my 16th birthday in January. There are always instructors on hand to give you information and advice. Herefordshire Aero Club and Shobdon Airfield is a brilliant facility and you never know what you might see land while you are there.

As Herefordshire Aeroclubs first full time flying instructors course student I can confirm that this club is a very friendly and professional setup. I was looked after brilliantly from arrival to departure last November/December, completing the course well within the planned time, and that during the winter months! With a lot history, surrounded by class G airspace, large variety of aircraft and good people I can’t recommend this establishment highly enough.

I am a student pilot here at Herefordshire Aero Club. My time here so far has been fantastic! From the minute you walk into the Club you are greeted by friendly fellow aerogeeks who are overflowing with information. My flight instructor Jody is extremely calm and collected. His experience and knowledge of flying is second to none! Every lesson is fun, informative, and exhilarating. The standards are kept very high, so student pilots are not allowed to get into bad habits. A++ flight school!!!!!

I can thoroughly recommend Herefordshire Aero Club as a great place to learn to fly. I’m currently studying for my LAPL licence, and would not have got as far as I have without the encouragement, support and dedication of Jody (CFI) and other members of the club. In addition to flight training, the breakfast is also fantastic value and just what a student needs before a lesson!

A friendly and professional club. Here you can concentrate on the techniques of flying and not worry abot the controlled airspace which is such a feature of our crowded island. My instructor was kind and forgiving ( very necessary in my case!). The airfield is in one of the quietest corners of England, and is a joy to fly over.
The costs are much lower than many centres, hence one gets good value for your hard-earned money.

This is an Excellent flying school. I have completed about 20 hours flying time towards getting my ppl here and couldn’t ask for a better place to learn. My flying instructor is great and all the staff are very polite and friendly. I look toward to hopefully getting my ppl here next year once I am 17.

I am currently enrolled as a student pilot on the school’s LAPL course and I can honestly say I am thoroughly enjoying it.
My instructor (Jody) is both professional and encouraging and his ability to impart his experience really does make the experience of learning to fly a very special one.
Having had a number of trial lessons with other schools I can honestly say that the level of excellence in instruction, both on the ground and in the air, is second to none. The attention to understanding, in particular to all safety aspects, really instils a sense of professionalism within the trainee from the first lesson. The ground briefings given are really good at getting you to understand why things happen, preparing you thoroughly for what you will see in the air. This all goes together to encourage your skills to build organically and the confidence in your own growing abilities to be nurtured. The enthusiasm displayed by all members of staff is very endearing and makes you feel like ‘one of the family’.
The club itself is incredibly welcoming, there always being some friendly face on hand to chat to or to impart an anecdote or pearl of wisdom.
The café on site offers a lovely selection of home cooked meals and the staff working there are very friendly. this makes the site a wonderful place to spend time on the ground as well, should you have family with you while you are airborne, or just wish to while away your afternoon watching the world fly by.
There is a thriving social aspect to the site, with a bar open at the weekends, and regular musical get togethers. There is also a caravan site attached to the airfield which I am keen to use at some point in the near future.
Oh and have mentioned the cost? the instruction rates are one of, if not the, lowest I’ve come across!!! (and believe me, I’ve looked around!!), and once you have completed your training, the hourly rates for aircraft hire are excellent (particularly to club and syndicate members).
If you are into general aviation and which to take your passion further, I highly recommend this club, and this airfield.
All in all, Shobdon is rapidly becoming one of my favourite places to be… and I’m counting the days until my next visit.

    Fantastic flying school because:
    1. Friendly, experienced and professional instructors.
    2. Location is conducive to training with the absence of controlled airspace locally.
    3. Excellent availability of aircraft/instructors.
    4. Low costs make it really affordable.

Hereford Aero Club at Shobdon has always been a special place for me, as it was from here many years ago that I took my first ever flight as a passenger in a light aircraft on a summer’s evening perfect for flying, I was briefly allowed the controls and I was hooked!
As a visitor I had always found the atmosphere at the club to be friendly and welcoming, now, as a student and club member I can fully appreciate just how inclusive the club is. There is always someone on hand happy to give advice and encouragement or just to spend time having a cuppa and share flying stories with in the cafe.
The flying instruction I have received has been excellent both in the classroom and in the air, with safety and understanding at the forefront without detracting from the sheer enjoyment of flying. The enthusiasm and support of all the instructors never fails to instil confidence in my ability to succeed.
The club’s commitment to assisting new pilots is also reflected in it’s very competitive prices.
Apart from actually learning to fly I really enjoyed the opportunity to become part of the marshalling team at the Shobdon Food & Flying Festival last year. This gave me a wonderful opportunity to meet the pilots and passengers who flew in for the festival and get a close up look at the many types of aircraft that came to visit, as well as giving me a great chance to understand exactly how the airfield worked.
