Shobdon Airfield – home of Herefordshire Aero Club. A great place to fly to, a great place to fly from and a great place to be…… a student pilot! In this article you’ll learn why students rank us as one of the top flying schools in the UK.

The airfield is ideal

From the moment you walk through the door, you’re assured of a warm and friendly welcome at this atmospheric WWII airfield in the fantastic Herefordshire countryside. Home to Herefordshire Aero club for over 60 years, Shobdon Airfield is a lively GA airfield operating rotary, fixed wing aircraft, micro-lights and gliders. You’ll enjoy the comparative calm of the Class G airspace that surrounds Shobdon, but you’re only a 20 minute flight from Class D airspace and more technical airfields – the best of both worlds.

We’re an approved flying training organisation

As a CAA Approved Training Organisation Herefordshire Aero Club offers the very highest standard of training to LAPL, PPL, Night Rating, IMC and Flight Instructor students using the Club owned and maintained fleet of three Cessna 152’s (all undergoing a complete refurbishment programme) and a very smart and well equipped PA28 Archer II.

Heading up the team of Instructors is CFI Jody Hoare supported by Barrie, Justin, Barry, Frank and Dennis – a friendly team offering a unique blend of experience, enthusiasm and support to every individual student. Standardisation of teaching methods means that students are guaranteed continuity and a consistent approach, whoever they fly with and as we have our own in- house examiners on hand, we can offer the complete package from first trial lesson right through to the final skills test.

But learning to fly doesn’t end with the instructor team – Herefordshire Aero Club is a busy, buzzing flying club and you’ll feel as if you belong from day one. There’s always someone around to share a cuppa in our Hotspur Cafe – (absolutely the best all day breakfast…. anywhere) – and a programme of club events – social and flying. Where else can you find an Approved Training Organisation, based at a friendly Club and such an amazing airfield that offers on site accommodation too? Whether you plan an intensive programme of flying training or are looking for somewhere to stay to do a couple of days training at a time, we can offer very comfortable on-site accommodation in one of our Club caravans, just a hop and a skip from the Club house.

Competitive fees with flexible payment options

Of course, cost is a major deciding factor in determining where you’re going to learn to fly. Check out the prices for each of our courses at As a guide, a LAPL course starts from about £5,350 and a PPL from about £7,200 including all ground school and exams. Remember, there are no home based landing fees to add to this cost. In fact, the only ‘extra’s’ you‘ll have to pay will be for your CAA Medical for a PPL and away landing fees (plus any exam re-sits, but of course you won’t need to do these!!).

This is a significant sum of money to find in one lump sum, so we will help by taking staged payments throughout your course. We are an approved ATPL Finance provider and if you have recently left or are about to leave the military, you may be eligible for ELCAS funding. Check out the details of both of these on We’ll plan a programme with you around your time and availability and so you can easily manage your training time, our online booking system allows you to book your instructor and an aircraft from the comfort of your own home at any time of the day or night.

A great pilot community to grow beyond your initial licence with

The big day comes – you complete your skills and navigation tests and are awarded your licence! So what next? Well, as you’ve been a full member of Herefordshire Aero Club from day one of your training – you’ll have made a number of flying friends who’ll be pleased to buddy up with you to explore further afield. You can try out different types of aircraft – maybe even buy into a syndicate and enjoy group flying; join in with club fly outs and competitions, enjoy the winter series of ‘refresher’ evenings and then progress to a Night Rating, an IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) rating; consider a Commercial Pilots Licence (which we hope to introduce in the very near future) or take the next step as a Flight Instructor yourself. The sky really is the limit!

But don’t just read about us – come along and see us – talk to some of our current students, meet the team, take a trial lesson and discover for yourself what Herefordshire Aero Club at Shobdon Airfield can offer you. We know you won’t be disappointed.
